Welcome to the elearning for Drug and Alcohol Awareness. This course is designed to enhance your ability to
identify the importance of proper training for your role. Maybe you assume that problems with drinking and drug
use on the job are things that happen in other workplaces. Or maybe you know that these issues exist in your
workplace, but you don’t think that they are any of your business. These assumptions can, in fact, be costly and
dangerous. Studies compiled by the United States Department of Labor indicate that 75 percent of illicit drug
users over 18, nearly 80 percent of binge and heavy drinkers, and 60 percent of adults with substance abuse
problems are currently employed.1 While not all of these people drink or take drugs on the job, some of them do.
And any impairment can put employers, coworkers, and clients at serious risk. While alcohol abuse is a wellknown
and common occurrence, the increased use of prescription pain medications has become a significant
problem along with heroin, cocaine, amphetamines, and marijuana use.
Mental health and substance abuse professionals trained in treating drug and alcohol problems usually
recommend inpatient and residential treatment along with medication, lifestyle changes, and other approaches.
Preventing drug and alcohol abuse in the workplace is imperative along with a prompt response when substance
abuse occurs.
